The rafters in the roof were not even milled, they were cypress logs with the bark still on them. The first building you came to was the bar. There was a small breezeway leading into the bar. It contained a juke-box and seats down the walls. The second building, at the end of the pier was the dance hall. It was used for square dances and other get togethers. Local kids were allowed to swim, fish and crab off the pier. Mrs. Cox would charge them a nickel. The Coxes home was built on the pier as well. The local Coast Guard Base was built in 1940. The base was operated by the Navy during WW2. The sailors and guardsmen would come to the Club on the weekends by boat and by car. There was always a lot of fighting to go along with the fellowship and drinking. The Coxes sold the property to Wilse Leary in 1953 and everything was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954. Mr. Leary began construction of the current building in 1955 and completed it in 1956. It was operated as a restaurant and used as a meeting place for civic organizations including the father of Senator Walter Jones. The Elizabeth City Shrine Club was started on May 18, 1944 and met in town on Poindexter Street behind the old Cornstalks Restaurant. Paul A. Perry was the first President. Some of the members formed a Holding Corporation in 1960 and Guy Webb was the President. The Holding Corporation purchased the current building from Mr. Leary in 1961 and have made several additions and improvements including the commercial kitchen, the bar and enlarged the dining area. All though many assisted in these projects, Nobles Dennis Bray, Wilse Burgess and their wives were instrumental in the building that stands today. The pier was grandfathered due to the original Chantilly Clubs remnants. It is presently the most substantial pier in Camden County. It was completed in July of 2005 and dedicated in October of the same year. Illustrious Potentate Tommy Boyd was on hand for the honor.
